Welcome support to end corridor care

Rory Deighton responds to steps announced by the government to help tackle corridor care.

Responding to the government’s announcement on action to tackle corridor care, including targeted support for trusts and the roll out of new urgent care services, Rory Deighton, acute care director at The NHS Alliance, said:

"We welcome the government’s action in offering bespoke clinical support and rolling out urgent care sites to end corridor care. Treating patients in temporary and often inappropriate spaces in hospitals and keeping them stuck in ambulances unable to enter hospitals, is frustrating, unsafe and undignified for patients and their families.

"While opening extra beds would ease this problem, it remains tough for hospitals to fund within tight budgets. Nonetheless, targeted help for the worst-affected trusts could enable best practice from other parts of the NHS to spread and benefit patients throughout the system.

"Ambulance and hospital staff are struggling with rising demand throughout urgent and emergency care. To ease the pressure and improve patient care, we need solutions across the whole health system – faster access to primary care, better alternatives to A&E, and specialist support for those with the greatest needs."
