Workforce plan must credit huge role of NHS staff from around the world

The General Medical Council (GMC) says that health services risk 'huge holes' if internationally qualified doctors quit.
Daniel Elkeles, chief executive, NHS Providers, said:
"We wouldn’t have an NHS if we hadn't for many years recruited talented and valued people from all around the world. The diversity of the NHS workforce is one of its biggest strengths.
"It's really worrying that so many highly skilled and highly valued international doctors the NHS just can't afford to lose are leaving in their droves. The valuable role of these staff can’t be ignored.
"While we work to create an NHS 'fit for the future' including recruiting more British staff we must support the development and wellbeing of present and future international NHS staff.
"Politicians and public should heed the GMC's warning that hardening rhetoric could put off doctors from wanting to work in the NHS.
"The NHS is undergoing massive change as we bring to life the government's 10-year health plan. The workforce is our greatest asset in our efforts. A 10-Year Workforce Plan will be essential to that work."
