AI regulation in healthcare must be safe, proportionate and trusted

Responding to the national commission into the regulation of AI in healthcare, the deputy director of policy at the NHS Alliance, David Williams, said:

“We welcome this report which rightly highlights the need for clarity around AI regulation, and the responsibilities of NHS organisations in an increasingly complex landscape.

“Local NHS leaders need to be clear about what is regulated, what assurances are required and how ongoing monitoring should work.

“We agree the approach must be safe, proportionate and trusted to ensure safe management of AI across the NHS and to command public confidence. 

“However, successful implementation will depend not only on the regulatory framework but also on whether organisations have the capacity, skills and support needed to adopt AI effectively in practice. Alongside clear standards, NHS leaders will need practical guidance, workforce development, sustainable investment and access to evidence of what works to support adoption and spread of safe AI across health systems. 

“We look forward to the government's response to the Commission's report and working with partners across the health system to support implementation of the Commission's recommendations."
