Welsh Government’s first 100 days: NHS leaders welcome collaboration and urge long-term action

Responding to the Welsh Government’s statement on delivering their first 100 days plan, director of the Welsh NHS Confederation, Darren Hughes, said:

“NHS leaders welcome the positive engagement shown by ministers and officials during the Welsh Government's first 100 days, including opportunities to shape discussions through key summits and meetings.

“The government's early focus on prevention, digital transformation and improving collaboration across public services is encouraging and aligns with the priorities we’ve been calling for on behalf of NHS leaders as essential to improving population health and creating a more sustainable health and care system.

“NHS leaders remain concerned that sustained, strategic investment in NHS estates and infrastructure is needed to improve productivity, patient experience and the long-term resilience of health and care services.

“We also need to see continued focus on investment in integration of health and social care, recognising the importance of social care in keeping people well in their communities.

“The scale of the challenge ahead cannot be underestimated. There is no quick fix, which is why we need a long-term plan for health and care if we are to improve outcomes for patients and ensure the sustainability of health and care services in Wales.

“NHS leaders stand ready to work with the Welsh Government, local government and wider partners to continue this dialogue and deliver the priorities in the upcoming Programme for Government.”
