Event insights: Responsible AI in NHS communications
Insights from our NHS Communications AI Network event in October 2026, where we explored responsible AI use in NHS communications, with a presentation from Stephen Waddington.
Our event
As the use of AI becomes increasingly embedded across the NHS communications landscape, the importance of having a clear, responsible approach that protects trust and reflects the values and responsibilities of NHS communications becomes ever clearer.
This NHS Communications AI Network event took a closer look at one of the most important questions facing communications teams: how can we use AI responsibly, while keeping people and professional judgement at the centre?
What we covered
At this event, we brought together communications professionals from across the NHS to explore the choices, responsibilities, and safeguards that need to sit alongside the opportunities presented by AI.
Looking beyond the technology itself, we focused on the people affected most by its use - from colleagues and patients, to communities and audiences.
We also discussed three new resources from the Network:
- Our updated Operating Framework - setting out a clear, practical approach to responsible AI use in NHS Communications.
- Our Workshop in a Box - currently in the testing phase, this is a ready-to-use resource to help teams have constructive conversations about AI, explore risks and opportunities, and agree local approaches.
- Our new self-assessment tool - also in the testing phase, this resource aims to help organisations understand where they are now, identify areas for development, and plan their next steps.
