Overview

Set and oversee your board’s risk appetite with clarity and confidence

The board holds overall responsibility and accountability for risk. Risk appetite is a core element of your organisation's risk management framework, and effectively articulating your board’s risk appetite is critical to effective decision-making and strategic alignment.

This interactive half-day session gives board members the tools and frameworks to define, communicate and apply risk appetite in practice to ensure your organisation’s approach supports good governance.

Key takeaways
  1. Understand the role of risk appetite in an effective risk management framework and how it can drive decision-making.
  2. Gain practical insights into the board's role in defining a collective view of risk appetite and the key steps for effective implementation.
  3. Explore real-life scenarios and how risk appetite can impact on the discussion and decisions made.
  4. Network with peers to share challenges and collaborate on solutions.

Why this matters

In a system facing growing complexity, financial pressure and political scrutiny, boards need a shared understanding of the amount and type of risk that their organisation is willing to accept to meet its strategic objectives. This is an important balance to strike between taking too little risk which can stifle innovation and progress, and too much risk which can lead to failure or loss.

Risk appetite defines the boundaries of risk an organisation is willing to take. This course supports you to understand the tools to develop a clearly defined, consistently applied risk appetite that supports better decision-making, stronger assurance, and a more confident approach to organisational risk management that supports strategic delivery.

The session clearly sets how a well constructed risk appetite can support Board decision making and clarify how the trusts strategies can be evaluated.

Sophie Guest is a governance and risk specialist with 16 years' experience supporting a broad range of organisations in both the private and charity sectors. Her particular interest lies in acting as a change agent to support organisations with low maturity to develop their governance, risk and compliance frameworks. She has worked both as a management consultant, and within in-house risk functions, so understands how to balance best practice theory with practical implementation. Sophie currently works at a healthcare charity where her focus is on developing the risk management framework and providing assurance to the board so that they are sighted on the key risks, and understand how well these are being managed.

Very useful course for board, risk management and governance colleagues. I have previously led risk appetite workshops based on what I saw others do but it is good to get some proper basis for this.
